On Unleased, you don’t have to accept whatever rent is listed. Many lease takeovers run as transparent auctions, so you can name your price. Here is how bidding works, when to skip it with Claim Now, and how to land the place you want.

How a transparent auction works

When a resident lists their lease, the listing can open for bids at a starting monthly rent. You place a bid for the rent you are willing to pay, and you can see where the bidding stands at any time. No hidden offers, no guessing what someone else put in.

When the auction clock runs out, the top bidder wins the right to apply for the lease. From there, you submit your verified documents and the property reviews your application.

What Claim Now does

Some listings also show a Claim Now price. Pay that rent and the lease is yours to apply for immediately, no auction, no waiting. Some listings are Claim Now only.

Tips for winning without overpaying

  1. Set your max before you bid. Decide the highest monthly rent you will pay, including utilities and fees, and stick to it.
  2. Do the full-term math. A $50 difference is $50 a month, multiplied by every month left on the lease. Know the total.
  3. Watch the clock. Check listings close to the end of the auction, when the final standing becomes clear.
  4. Compare to Claim Now. If bids are climbing toward the Claim Now price, claiming may be the smarter move.
  5. Get your documents ready first. Winning is only the first step. A photo ID and proof of income or a guarantor mean faster approval.
  6. Bid on more than one place. Especially in busy markets, keep a backup option in play.

Is browsing and bidding free?

Yes. Browsing and bidding are free. Any fees are shown clearly before you commit to a lease.

What happens after you win

You apply with verified documents, Unleased handles identity verification and a background check, and the property reviews you like any other applicant. Once approved, the lease transfers to you. Read the full walkthrough in How lease takeovers work on Unleased.
